U.S elections starts...11 months early

Most Singaporeans have never heard of the state of Iowa before. Most Singaporeans cannot point it out on the map and have no idea what's so important about it.

That change once every 4 years or so as the state of Iowa is the state where the U.S Democratic and Republican parties first decide on who will contest the U.S presidential elections. Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee ended up as Iowa's presidential champions but I personally wondered why the U.S can't come up with a better system to elect its' candidates. The 'real' U.S presidential elections is about 11 months away. Surely its' way, way to soon to start the election a year before the exact date. That's not even counting the amount of time and money (over US$100 million spent already) wasted on it.

Shouldn't the Americans worry about other stuff than an election a year away? Something like the $100 oil price for starters!
