Comics this week

Justice League #1- It's here! The DC Universe has been reborn and Justice League #1 is the flagship for the new DCU. The expectations and risks are high and DC knows it, putting superstar writer Geoff Johns and famed artist Jim Lee on board for the new Justice League. So how was it? My take on #1 is mixed. Set 5 years in the past, #1 is the origin story of the new Justice League. The issue has Batman and Green Lantern meeting up in Gotham as Green Lantern is chasing a report of an alien in the city. After destroying the alien, they decided to go find the most famous alien they know of, Superman, to see if he knows anything about the dead alien. Yes, #1 is a little slow but whereas Geoff Johns fails on the pacing, he did deliver on the character/personality clash of Hal Jordan and Bruce Wayne. The banter between the two moved the issue along nicely and Jim Lee's slick art complement the story. The plot itself is nothing special. The heroes are feared by the public, they operate separately from each other and a threat (cough, Darkseid, cough) requires them to band together to fight off this threat. That is why I am mixed on this issue. It’s nice and fun but nothing special. As the flagship and rebirth of the DCU, I was hoping for more.
