The Certain Veto

So Western and Arab states are outrage after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. resolution that would have backed a plan urging Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give up power. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the veto a "travesty" while Washington's U.N. ambassador Susan Rice said she was "disgusted" by the vetoes.

America and their allies seem shocked and surprised by the veto. Uh…why? I would have thought that after the Libyan vote late last year, it would be an iron-clad certainty that both China and Russia would veto anything on Syria. Last year, the U.N. voted for a no-fly zone in Libya. The West and NATO used that as an excuse to help Libyan rebels and attacked Libyan tanks and troops. NATO became the rebels’ airforce in all but name.

Now I’m not saying President al-Assad is a good man. He’s far from it, which was why America sent terrorist detainees to him, but anyone who seriously believe China and Russia were going to fall for the same trick again need his head examined.
